Dude Write 18 and Life to Go

Welcome to Dude Write!

We are thrilled to have you here, whether you are a Writer Dude, a Blogger Dude, a Reader Dude or a Fanatic of good writing. If you've stumbled upon us via a link and wondering what you've gotten yourself into, our Mission Statement should explain it all.

Ahh… to be 18 again and know what I know now. How many times have you heard that? How many times have you said it yourself? Plenty!

When you’re 18 you have the world on a string. The world is your oyster; all you have to do is open up your mouth and consume it. You think you know everything there is to know about everything, or at least, everything you will need to know to vanquish all obstacles that dare come before you. You think you know where you’re going, and most likely have ironed out, or at least imagined, what you want to be when you grow up.

Then when you finally do grow up, you realize you had no freaking clue at 18. You realize, often early on, that life likes to kick you in the teeth or sucker punch you in the jibblies when you least expect it, taking joy in screwing up any well intended plans you might have had.

I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who, at the age of 18, has pictured what their life was going to be like and was right. I know they are out there… somewhere… but they are an exceedingly rare breed of humans. Part of the reason is we can’t predict the future (well some of us can – the world is going to end in 70 days, 2 hours, 58 minutes and 39 seconds – you have been warned!). The other problem is, as humans we are in a constant flux of change. Our interests change, our values change, our tastes in music, women, and food change as we grow older. All the while the world around us, and the people we know and love, are changing too.

If you could be 18 again, armed with the knowledge and wisdom that you possess today, would you? What would you do differently?
